Frequently Asked Questions
Do you audition choir members?
No, all singers are welcome, and prior choir experience is not necessary. We do ask that new members send us a simple voice recording of themselves, so we can determine where they'll fit in with the group.
Do you perform?
Our Fall and Spring seasons culminate in a final performance or Song Share, as we call it. These are our opportunities to share our music with family, friends, and the public at large. Our final Song Shares are always benefits for local non-profit groups, with 100% of the performance proceeds going to the beneficiary, which changes from season to season. Some seasons we also do smaller, informal Song Shares, (like visiting local Assisted Living communities, for example), as a way to reach out and give back to the community. Summer seasons are not performance seasons. Summer is more casual, offering different options for participation, including a drop-in option.
Can I try it out before I commit to a season?
Yes! We have OPEN SING nights at the beginning and the end of each performance season (Spring & Fall). And, our Summer season is also a more casual, non-performance season, with different levels of commitment, from full-season packages to drop-in options.
What type of music do you sing?
Our reportoire is a mix of modern folk, choral, and world music. We strive to pick music that uplifts, energizes, and sometimes challenges us to become the best singers we can be. We try to include some music from different cultures in every season. Most of our music is taught aurally, by call and response, though we do sometimes use sheet music for more complex songs.
Do I need to read music?
No. Most of our songs are taught aurally, by call and response. We do occasionally use sheet music for longer, more complex pieces, and we help non-readers understand the basics of written music, in a fun, non-stressful way. We also provide listening tracks for members, to help them learn parts by ear.
Is attendance mandatory?
During our performance seasons, (Spring and Fall), we ask that members commit to regular attendance; not only to learn the music efficiently, but to learn to how to sing with each other as a group. Regular attendance also boosts the community atmosphere that is so important to our choir's culture. Summer seasons are more casual and non performance-based, with different levels of attendance commitment, including a drop-in option.
How do I join?
Choose a season from the “Sing With Us” section of the website and fill out the related registration or interest form. That will add you to our new member interest list. For performance seasons (Spring and Fall), we also ask new applicants to send us a simple voice recording of themselves singing. (Details are given when you complete the form.) We have a limited capacity for each season, so first priority is always given to returning choir members. After a given date, usually a couple weeks prior to the season start, we begin to invite new members off the interest list, in the order in which we received their interest form and voice recordings.
